Giving Back:

For Crispin Sturrock, charity isn’t just an obligation—it’s a deeply personal mission woven into the fabric of his life and work. As a child, Crispin spent time at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where he experienced first-hand the impact of compassionate care and support. Those early days left an indelible mark, sparking a lifelong commitment to helping others in need, especially vulnerable children and families facing hardship.

Today, Crispin’s dedication to philanthropy goes beyond mere donations. In partnership with Oasis Community Housing. Oasis actively work to provide essential support for people experiencing homelessness, helping them find stability and dignity through housing solutions.

For Crispin, giving back is an extension of his creative vision—a way to contribute to the world beyond the canvas, addressing issues that resonate with him on a personal level. His art may explore the depths of human experience, but it’s his philanthropic work that reflects his unwavering belief in the power of community, compassion, and resilience.

This drive to give back fuels not only his art but his everyday life, as he seeks to make a meaningful difference for those who, like him, have needed a helping hand. In this vein, a percentage of all works detailed below will go towards Oasis Community Housing and other charities close to Crispin’s heart.

#043 WHISPERS OF HOPE, 2022

Acrylic on canvas

60 x 180 cm / 23 x 71 inches

Crispin Sturrock – Sonnet:

Whispers of Hope
(for Oasis Community Housing)

In winter’s grasp, a shadowed figure stands,
Beside a path, beneath the burdened sky.
With bin and pine as witness, empty hands
Cling to the faintest warmth that hope supplies.

The brush is stark, yet whispers faintly tell
Of nights endured, of courage worn and frail.
A solitary prayer, a muted knell,
Rings through the chill where kindness seems to pale.

Yet faith endures, though brittle as the snow,
In quiet pleas for mercy, strength, and grace.
A soul, unseen by all, the world below,
Finds solace only in this guarded place.

Let hearts be stirred, let giving hands extend,
For in this silent hope, our care must mend.

Crispin Sturrock's Whispers of Hope (2022) is a hauntingly beautiful work that evokes empathy and introspection, bringing attention to the often unseen struggles of those who are destitute and homeless.

The 1.8m x 80cm painting, set in a cold winter landscape, features a faded, solitary figure standing by a park pine, barely distinguishable from their surroundings. The somber tones and soft, layered brushwork emphasize the figure’s isolation, conveying an almost ghostly presence—frozen by both the physical cold and societal neglect.

Sturrock’s use of subdued colours and a stark winter setting creates a visual metaphor for loneliness and abandonment. The painting draws the viewer in, encouraging reflection on their own comfort and privilege, while simultaneously immersing them in the harsh, desolate experience of the person depicted.

By painting with care and subtlety, Sturrock elevates the work beyond its initial starkness, inviting viewers to linger and feel the emotional weight beneath the surface.

Whispers of Hope is not just a statement on homelessness—it’s a call to empathy, urging viewers to consider the depth of gratitude they should feel for their own warmth and security, while also contemplating the reality of living in the "cold shoes" of those less fortunate.

This poignant, layered work continues Sturrock’s commitment to social issues, with art functioning as both a visual narrative and a platform for compassion.

#023 Savage Garden / Consciousness 2020

Acrylic and oilstick on canvas

180 x 280 cm / 71 x 110 inches

Crispin Sturrock's 'Savage Garden - Consciousness' is a thought-provoking abstract painting that invites the viewer to contemplate the complexities and uncertainties of humanity's quest for exploration and discovery. The painting symbolising the daunting challenges and risks that come with venturing into the unknown.

The layers of paint in the artwork are rich with motifs and clues that reflect the incredible minds of mankind and their unquenchable thirst for knowledge. From the earliest voyages across the seas to the cutting-edge space exploration of today, humans have relentlessly pursued the mysteries of the universe at their ultimate cost.

Through its depiction of a search for a new Eden in the vast expanse of space, the painting suggests that we are driven by a deep-seated desire to find meaning and purpose beyond our current existence and become multi-planetary. The possibilities of living in a tin can or on a new planet that will take generations to develop raise profound questions about what we sacrifice to achieve for our own kind and what we will leave behind.

Sturrock draws upon the visionary figure of Elon Musk and his company SpaceX, who are at the forefront of the quest to establish a human presence on Mars. The painting captures the emotional uncertainty and challenges of this bold vision, while also highlighting the immense potential rewards that could be gained from such a venture.

Ultimately, 'Savage Garden - Consciousness' is a poignant reminder that humanity's pursuit of knowledge and exploration is a deeply ingrained part of our nature, driving us ever forward towards new frontiers and possibilities. It challenges us to confront the risks and uncertainties of the unknown, while also celebrating the boundless potential of our human spirit.

#029 REWIND NA, 2021

Acrylic and oilstick on canvas

100 x 140 cm / 39 x 55 inches

Crispin Sturrock's piece REWIND NA is a profound commentary on the overlooked plight of the homeless, created to raise awareness and funds for homelessness charity efforts.

The title, "NA" meaning "not applicable," symbolises the way society often treats the most vulnerable—as if their struggles are irrelevant or unseen in the pursuit of progress and wealth.

This painting portrays a stranded family, highlighting the emotional and physical isolation experienced by those left behind in a world obsessed with materialism and self-interest.

The work’s use of yellow and green hues against a blurred backdrop of towering skyscrapers creates a stark contrast between the cold indifference of the corporate world and the fragile hope embodied by the small girl at the centre. Holding a white balloon, she acts as a beacon, signalling distress—a call for help that is often ignored.

The looming buildings overshadow the family, symbolising how societal structures can block out the light of hope and compassion, leaving those in need cold and abandoned.

Through REWIND NA, Sturrock makes an urgent plea to reconsider how we engage with those less fortunate, reminding us that while society’s "hands" may often take from the vulnerable, there is a profound need for love, care, and human connection to restore hope and dignity to those who are suffering.

The work’s donation to charity further exemplifies the artist's commitment to social justice, using art not only as an aesthetic medium but as a tool for real-world impact.
